Hides Camp Kitchen Renovation

Hides Camp Kitchen gets full renovation and upgrades thanks to TE (PNG)

Overview

Hides Camp Komo services quite a few hundred staff each day, providing meals, accommodation and other facilities for the workers in the area. The camp kitchen was built around 2008 when the number of staff was smaller, and with growth in the area and time it had become tired, equipment was failing and it needed some upgrades.

The operators decided it was time for a full upgrade, to ensure dining services would be sufficient for both current operations and future growth.

Challenge

Hides is located in the Southern Highlands Province. Access in and out of the site is limited, equipment and parts have to be bought in via long distance road or helicopter. Staff travel on charter flights from the site and you can’t just go down to the local hardware store if you have forgotten something. There was a strict timeline on the upgrade due to it being a working kitchen, and with multiple areas needing to coordinate together the logistics and planning was crucial to a successful project.

Requirements

The mess facility was required to be stripped back to bare bones. The flooring needed replacement, fire check sheeting installed around the kitchen and new internal walls and kitchen outline for optimised working flow. The existing fire suppression system required replacement, as did the hygiene stations for diners.

Solution

TE (PNG) Ltd proposed a new commercial grade Anderson vinyl flooring solution to cover the 740 square metres. 10mm fire check sheeting was installed in the kitchen area, a 2.5m and 3m extraction system installed and full framing and plaster board sheeting of new kitchen walls. A fully certified fire suppression system was installed for kitchen safety. The entire solution was installed and painted in only a couple of weeks. New ceiling tiles were fitted and overall the entire area was refreshed.

A system of 8 sensor driven hand basins and 4 sensor hand dryers were installed to ensure hygiene was kept to a high standard. Our commercial catering team worked closely with the chefs and their kitchen team to optimise the kitchen layout for best workflow, and assisted with the setup of this.
