Communication – Air Services PNG

Cambium Network’s carrier class licensed microwave network supports PNG Air traffic into the future

Overview

The continuous increase in air travel has created a challenge for air traffic authorities to maintain and upgrade their communications infrastructure to ensure the highest level of air and ground safety.

Air traffic control (ATC) requires a mix of communication services to enable effective management of ground and aerial control, as well as ensuring always-on connectivity between the airport, control centres and aircraft.

After decades of operation, PNG Air Services decided it was time to upgrade their legacy Radar System to MLAT (Rannoch Multilateration Aeronautical Information Services).

The Challenge

MLAT requires the need to deliver voice, data, radar, guidance systems, video, telemetry and other traffic using a wide variety of interfaces, network structures and technology generations.

Above all, given the critical nature of ATC systems, their communications must be reliable and secure at all times. Coupled with the complex communications requirement, PNG has some of the most challenging terrain on the planet.

The Requirements

Air Services PNG required a high-throughput, low latency, universally available and redundant licensed microwave network to link eight MLAT sites around the complex, rural and challenging terrain of PNG.

This was to enable them to bring their air traffic management systems up to date so that they could include such services as:

  • Airport surface surveillance.
  • Approach surveillance for ground and aerodrome control.
  • Surveillance in air space with and without radar coverage.
  • Providing data for ground-based operations such as noise monitoring and gate provision and management.

The Solution

A very scalable, future-proof solution was installed using Cambium Network’s PTP820G fully redundant licensed microwave ring, using G.8032 Ethernet Ring Protection (ERP) with greater than 99.9% availability, redundant power and less than 8ms of latency.

TE (PNG) was chosen to design, integrate and commission the solution to ensure the critical communication needs of Air Services PNG were met.

To help support the implementation of this complex solution, BMS Network Solutions was also on hand to provide training support to both teams on the ground in PNG.

The Results

PNG can now confidently deploy a world-class air traffic control system that is reliable, future-proof and state-of-the-art.

Airport operations can now be performed more efficiently and even more safely. The reliable communications network across very difficult terrain now provides secure communications, enabling Air Services PNG to perform ever more complex air traffic management operations.

Air Services PNG is now looking to grow the Cambium Networks PTP820 footprint further across PNG.
