Electrical and Hardware – Mabudawan Solar System

Department of Health Daru commissions solar inverters to resume services in one of the most remote locations in PNG

Overview

Mabudawan Health Centre is in rural Western Province and is the first of its kind in Papua New Guinea.

The main health centre facility includes birthing suites, a neonatal ward, TB isolation ward, dentistry department, radiology, pathology and an accident and emergency facility. The Mothers’ Waiting House, TB Infectious Patients’ Transit House, eleven staff houses as well as a Guardians’ Amenities block surround the main health centre.

There are both electric and rural incinerators together with a generator shed.

The Challenge

Mabudawan Health Centre is located in a remote site in Daru western province and services about 18,000 people.

Access to the centre is two hours via dinghy or a banana boat from Daru. Given the geographic location and provision of services to the outstations, the health centre is solely reliant on the solar system and back-up generators.

In this remote area, fuel is barely accessible – and costly when it is available to purchase.

It was definitely a challenge to have sufficient power and maintain back-up generators, so when the power supply from the existing solar system malfunctioned, Mabudawan Health Centre needed power restored and made sustainable for the future.

The Requirements

The malfunction of the existing solar system necessitated a review of the facility. The following was required:

  • Provision of power equipment.
  • Restoration of the electricity supply from their solar system.

To do this required the TE (PNG) teams to travel remotely for the installation and restoration of the power supply.

The Solution

The Mabudawan Health Centre had an electricity supply from a 25kw 415v three-phase diesel generator and a 15kw 415v three-phase solar inverter system as a back-up to the generator.

TE (PNG) found a solution to restore their inverters for the existing solar system power supply.

The Results

We were successful in the installation of three 240vac 5kw Victron Easy Solar Inverters.

The system was completed and commissioned, with the generator system back to normal operations.
